Final Portfolio

For my final project, I decided to include all of the projects and assignments I have completed this semester. I wanted to show how my projects have progressed from my logo and a more simple caligramme to my stop motion video.  I really enjoyed working with In Design. For my portfolio, I went with a more simple and clean look so that my assignments would be the focus of each page. My favorite projects to work on this semester were the collage environment and the self insertion project. I really enjoy working with Photoshop. Overall, this class helped me significantly. As an Advertising and Public Relations major, I quickly realized that being able to work in different Adobe programs is a crucial part to getting a job or an internship in this field. I will take the many techniques I have learned in this class and continue practicing and applying them in any future projects I work on.

Short Animated Video

stephanietorre_anim from stephanie torre on Vimeo.

For my short animated video, I chose to do a stop motion video using After Effects. This project was a challenge for me and I think for some parts of the video I took too many photos so I had to change it to 30 frames per second and for the ending I think I took too few pictures so the end of the video is too fast and it gets hard to see what happens at the end, but the stop motion as a whole is about someone who books a flight online, excitedly packs and gets ready to head to the airport, gets to the aiport and finds out her flight already departed.

Story Board for Stop Motion Video

This is my story board for my stop motion animated video. For the final scene I might change the character chasing the plane to her looking at the missed flights board at the airport.

Collage Environment

For my collage environment I really wanted to incorporate features of London but I was also inspired by Coldplay's Adventure of a Lifetime which is where I got my song lyric from but I was also inspired by artist Eduardo Recife which is why I added diamonds and planets. The background I used is just the picture of Stonehenge and then I added the rocks at the bottom of the image. I also added the telephone booth, the chimpanzees, the diamonds, E.T. on the bike, the planets and the UFO.

To create the rock layer, I found an image of a rocky shoreline on the internet and used the magnetic lasso tool to cut some rocks from that image and then I just changed the sizes of the rocks and overlapped them to create this rocky foreground effect. For my telephone booth I used the eraser tool to make the windows go from white to looking more transparent and I used the brush tool to make blades of grass come up over the telephone booth and I used it around the rocks as well. For each of the added images to this background I used the eraser tool on the edges to make each figure look a little less like a cut out with hard edges.

Magazine Cover

I  edited this photo of me using only the spot healing brush tool to remove small blemishes on my skin. I thought the lighting and color of this image was good as it is. I chose to make this a Us Weekly magazine however I changed the text from overlapping bubble letters to slim bold letters. The images I used for my magazine are 1.) the image of me, 2.) the barcode, 3.) a photo of Kendall Jenner, 4.) a photo of Gigi Hadid and 5.) the "Darling the art of being a woman" text was actually the title font for another magazine but I made it like it was an article in the magazine. Some of the words are a little hard to read because they overlap my body and the print on my cover up is very busy but overall I really like how this project turned out.

Me in a photoshopped photo

For our first photoshop assignment, I combined this picture of myself into this photo of Mulder and Scully from The X Files. The X Files is my favorite television show so I was very excited to do this assignment. I also worked with Photoshop a little bit in high school so this program was more familiar to me than Illustrator. Here is the finished product:

I attempted to add a bit more light to my face to make it stand out like Mulder and Scully's and adjusted the black and white color on it. To crop this image out, I used the magnetic lasso tool and the lasso tool to crop any excess pieces of the background image that were still attached to the figure. I blurred the edges of my body just a little bit to make my body look a little less like a cut out. I am happy with the way this image turned out and I like how it looks like I am walking out of the smoke from the background.

HTML Project

For my first HTML project I made a cartoon bear. This project was definitely the most challenging project I have done this semester because I have never attempted to do coding on Text Wrangler before. To make this bear, I eyed a chart to find the x and y values but I didn't actually draw this image on the chart first and then find the numbers. I did a lot of guessing on the numbers and found that to be easier for me than doing the math to get  the numbers. Here is the complete code I used to make this bear:

<!DOCTYPE HTML>
<html>
<head>
<script>
window.onload = function() {
var canvas = document.getElementById("myCanvas");
var context = canvas.getContext("2d");

////////////////////////////////////// start below this line ˇˇˇˇˇˇˇˇˇˇ

//background
context.beginPath();
context.rect(0, 0, 800, 600);
context.fillStyle = '#FFCCFF';
context.fill();

//head
context.beginPath();
context.arc(400, 275, 150, 0, 2*Math.PI, false);
context.fillStyle = '#663300';
context.fill();

//nose
context.beginPath();
context.arc(400, 285, 50, 0, 2*Math.PI, false);
context.fillStyle = '#996600';
context.fill();

//ears
context.beginPath();
context.arc(300, 115, 40, 0, 2*Math.PI, false);
context.fillStyle = '#996600';
context.fill();
context.beginPath();
context.arc(500, 115, 40, 0, 2*Math.PI, false);
context.fillStyle = '#996600';
context.fill();

//nostrils
context.beginPath();
context.arc(380, 290, 15, 0, 2*Math.PI, false);
context.fillStyle = 'black';
context.fill();
context.beginPath();
context.arc(420, 290, 15, 0, 2*Math.PI, false);
context.fillStyle = 'black';
context.fill();

//mouth
context.beginPath();
context.moveTo(300, 325)
context.quadraticCurveTo(400, 475, 500, 325);
context.lineWidth = 6;
context.lineCap = 'round'
context.stroke();

//eyes
context.beginPath();
context.arc(350, 205, 20, 0, 2*Math.PI, false);
context.fillStyle = 'white';
context.fill();
context.beginPath();
context.arc(460, 205, 20, 0, 2*Math.PI, false);
context.fillStyle = 'white';
context.fill();

//pupils
context.beginPath();
context.arc(350, 205, 12, 0, 2*Math.PI, false);
context.fillStyle = 'black';
context.fill();
context.beginPath();
context.arc(460, 205, 12, 0, 2*Math.PI, false);
context.fillStyle = 'black';
context.fill();

////////////////////////////////////// end above this line ˆˆˆˆˆˆˆˆˆˆˆˆˆˆˆ

};

</script>
</head>
<body>
<canvas id="myCanvas" width="800" height="600"></canvas>
</body>

Complex Vector Illustration

For my complex vector illustration, I chose to make a monarch butterfly on a flower. For me, the hardest part about this illustration was making the winds and the flower. There were many very tiny details and many small spaces that were hard to get into and make more detailed so for some parts I did generalize a little bit and make it more cartoon-ish.

Exquisite Corpse

For my Exquisite Corpse project I chose to do the Fishapus. I used the pen tool for everything and filled in each item with regular color or played around with gradients. I used gradients on the tentacles, the water, the bubbles in the water, the sky, the button on the briefcase and the island. I also used the ellipse tool a lot for the suction cups on the tentacles, the bubbles, the buttons on the suit, the fish eye, the buckle on the hat, the coconuts, and the starfish on the island.

Logo Design

For my logo design, I went with my favorite sketch option which is a drawing of a cabbage with the name of my fictional company inside of it. I scanned my design onto the computer and then traced over it with the pen tool on Illustrater. Next I used the paintbrush tool to paint strokes of different shades of green into my design to make it look more like a cabbage. I tried using different shades of green to give it the effect of shadows and variations in color. After that I used the Gaussian blur tool to blend these colored paint strokes together and make the cabbage look more dewey instead of having stiff, bold brush strokes on my design. In addition to this, I lightened the opacity on pieces of the cabbage leaves to give if the effect of having light shining on them.

Here is the original logo design I created. For my logo design, this was the first sketch I came up with and it was also my favorite one.

Logo Critique

1.) Starbucks logo - I believe that the target audience for this logo is people in their 20s and 30s. This mermaid is not your typical cartoon you would see in children's books or TV shows but rather a mythological looking mermaid with 2 tails. I feel that this logo is very successful though it has gone through big changes since it first started. I think that because the company has simplified it's logo over the years, it has been easier to recognize based on the colors and simple design.

2.) Ikea logo - I think this logo is easy for people of all ages to see. The short name in a simple bold text and recognizable colors makes it easy to spot from far away. I think most people can tell this logo is Ikea just based on the colors alone. The simple shape and design help make this logo distinguishable from far away or in small sizes

3.) Ebay logo - I believe this logo targets adults. For children the different sized and overlapping letters might be confusing to read. I think the colors make this logo look very appealing, much like the google logo.The simple design makes me think this website looks easy to use.

4.) Snapchat logo - I think the target age for this logo is teenagers through people in their 20s. This app is equipped with funny face filters, trophies and top snapchat friends, almost like a game and social media app combined, both of which younger people tend to enjoy more. The yellow color really captures your attention and the ghost reflects the silly aspect of the app.

5.) Twitter logo - I think this logo can be recognized by teens through middle aged people. Unlike other social media apps, twitter is used by people from a wide range of ages. The logo reflects the word "tweet" when you type a thought out, just like a bird tweets to speak. I think twitter is a great app to get messages and news spread quickly to other people on the internet and their logo reflects that with what looks to me like a talking bird.

5 Ideas For My Fictional Company

1.) A healthy restaurant that is also part produce and flower market.

2.) High heeled shoes that can have the heel taken off to turn into flats.

3.) An app that finds unusual restaurants and things to do in the area you are in based on your location. You can change the mile range and preferences to be more specific in what you're looking for.

4.) A building like a museum where modern artists paint murals everywhere on the walls, floors and ceilings and visitors can come and see them like a regular museum. The paintings will be covered and a new artist will paint something new in its place once a year or once or twice a year so there will constantly be new art.

5.) Website that lets you rent designer clothing, shoes and accessories for an affordable price

About Me

Hi my name is Stephanie Torre and I am a sophomore majoring in Advertising and Public Relations at the University of Tampa. I love to draw, paint, travel, read and watch Netflix in my free time. I am currently a member of Alpha Chi Omega and a volunteer with Reading Pals here in Tampa. I have three cats and one dog and I am from Miami, Florida.

Through Beginning Digital Arts, I hope to gain a better understanding on how to use various computer programs such as Photoshop or Illustrator to help me excel in my future career. I expect to learn how to make logos, gifs, edit photos on Photoshop and learn how to create computer animations.
